And naturally…
...the conservative stupids are taking skits like the SNL opening last night as a slam on Obama.
Yeah, you guys really need to get hold of the helm again and maybe get rid of any business regulation whatsoever, because we've still got a couple of native industries that might want to flee elsewhere on our dime. Oh, and...start a couple-few more wars for no reason except to pour money we don't have into more wars and make good and sure we run one of our last legitimate resources as a world power – our military – out of gas.
I would suggest the next GOP administration start pointless wars in Antarctica and on Mars. That'll make absolutely sure that when calamity comes, all our troops and materiel are tied up as far away as possible, and we don't even have money for bus fare to get any of it back here.
Oh, and definitely keep your finger near That Button, President Palin, because it's going to be the only bargaining chip the US has left, soon.* Of course, a lot of that is also in silos all over the world in other people's countries, and if you can't do anything else, a gazillion tons of cement down that silo is cheap and neutralizes that particular threat pretty quick.
How the terrorists won, let me show you it.
--
*This is, really, the only reason I care anymore about party politics in this country. I just don't want the party constantly drooling over the possibility of Nuking Everything to be in charge when the temptation inevitably becomes greatest, here.
Tweedle me deedles.

I think continually of those who were truly great

I think continually of those who were truly great. Who from the womb, remembered the soul's history Through corridors of light where the hours are suns, Endless and singing. Whose lovely ambition Was that their lips, still touched with fire, Should tell of the Spirit clothed from head to foot in song. And who hoarded from the Spring branches The desires falling across their bodies like blossoms.
What is precious is never to forget The essential delight of the blood drawn from ageless springs Breaking through rocks in worlds before our earth. Never to deny its pleasure in the morning simple light Nor its grave evening demand for love. Never to allow gradually the traffic to smother With noise and fog the flowering of the spirit.
Near the snow, near the sun, in the highest fields See how these names are feted by the waving grass And by the streamers of white cloud And whispers of wind in the listening sky. The names of those who in their lives fought for life Who wore at their hearts the fire's center. Born of the sun they traveled a short while towards the sun, And left the vivid air signed with their honour.

All signs point to nap
It's been rainy and gloomy all day today; it's 3:06pm and my brain has yet to achieve anything resembling liftoff, and my bed is looking fetching as hell. I don't need a brick to hit me in the head to know what I ought to do.
As soon as I post this entry I'm going to stand and stagger in my bed's direction. If I don't make it I'll still be golden, since I have that pile of laundry that I should've done but just couldn't muster the enthusiasm to do, there on the floor to break my fall. So it all works out. : )

The Funky Werepig Welcomes Skullvines / Update to Dominatrix Pose Promo Hey folks,
Tonight, The Funky Werepig welcomes those crazy Skullvines Press dudes, Jerrod Balzer and S.D. Hintz! You don't want to miss this. Hilarity will ensue. I guarantee it! Be there tonight at 9 pm EST.
It's going to be a Skullvines Thanksgiving!

* * * *
Dominatrix Pose Promo Updated
Because I'm just a nice gal, I've decided to make the Dominatrix Pose Promo easier. We have less than 1 year to sell 1000 copies of The Black Act, and then I'll do the dominatrix picture, with whip included!
All you have to do now, instead of sending your proof of purchase, is send me an email and name two other witches in the book besides Anna and Claire. That's it! That simple! I'll keep your name in my little black top hat, and once we sell 1000 copies, the picture is done, and you get a signed copy!

The Black Act Louise Bohmer
And big squishy thanks to all who have already purchased a copy. When I get cross border in 2010 for a couple cons, be sure to come up with your copy of TBA and get it signed. I'm gonna give away free hugs at all cons! (hehe)
Okay, folks. Off for me daily walkies.

didn't see that one coming from six miles away...
- University of California loans the state money to help with the state's budget shortfall
- UC discovers: woe, we have a deficit!
- UC regents vote to increase student fees by over 30%
- news leaks out about a couple of overpaid staff members being given large raises (which only happens, oh, every year)
- protests and riots
Wow. Riots? Never! Especially not in Berkeley, where a couple of people lived in a bloody tree for a year or so to keep it from being cut down. No. They'd probably meekly hand over the money and go on with life.

health care, again Well, enough votes went in that they'll be debating it. Which pretty much means it will pass in some form or other. Having heard different numbers on the same day from the same reporters as to the cost or number of pages in the document, who knows what will be in there. One Senator encouraged the public to read the bill. Ha! Most people can't read legalese, and those who do probably do not want to waste several weekends reading a few thousand pages -- pages that will be modified before they get to the end. With the level of technology the government supports for public documents, I am willing to bet that even if they posted the document it would be out of date, and even if they updated it they would not provide diffs. And if I did read it, my voice would be no louder than someone who just made up an opinion.
Whatever. I'm feeling a bit anarchistic today.
There are two things that I believe are in the current version that I don't really agree with. One is the abortion bit. Sure, it won't pass without that, but you know? If you won't cover abortions then you damn well better not cover Viagra or fertility treatments. The road goes both ways, my friend.
The other is forcing people who can to buy insurance. I know, emergency rooms, big expenses, blah blah blah. But if you're young and know you are immortal, you might need that money for something else. I was uninsured for several years. It saved me several thousand dollars every one of those years not to pay for insurance. A thousand bucks can be the difference between starvation and life. Was I lucky? Yeah. But the point is that insurance is not a mandate: it is a gamble. Every payment you make, whether to private insurance companies or to the government, is a wager that you will need more care than the payment costs. And the house never offers games where it will not win overall.
Insurance makes sense for most people. I'm going to stay covered if at all possible, no matter what it costs. Now. Because I'm looking at a single deck blackjack game where the primary and secondary counts are solidly in my favour. In the long run I have the advantage by playing. I do not think that is the case for everyone at all points in their lives, and I do not think it is fair or just to point a gun at someone and force them to play when the deck is against them.

chickens and imaginary friends

Work on Bethany Rose has kept me busy, as I’m on the last three or four thousand words now. The total word count will run over my intended 100,000 words but as I’ve already decided to delete one minor character completely that’s not an issue. This is only the first draft, of course; there’s a lot of work to be done yet, editing and polishing. Some people balk at this aspect of writing but I thoroughly enjoy it.
I’ve enjoyed writing Bethany’s story. Her character’s an interesting mixture of contradictions; sensitive but strong, creative but practical, and incredibly brave in the face of awful circumstances. She’s a very different person from Tamsin, that’s for sure. But I won’t say too much about her publicly for now.
I’ve also been enjoying our two chickens. In the spring, Mum began talking about having two pet chickens. She gave it some thought, and by early summer they were in residence in her small garden. Richard laughed and told her we’d have them by Xmas. Well he was right, and here they are.
Cute little characters they are, too, with amusing habits and quizzical expressions. They’re not in the least bothered by our dogs. Actually, Ygraine has already lost interest. Emily is more inquisitive, though, having discovered that these new residents produce mini footballs - eggs to you and me.
Richard’s famous. Really, he is. Check him out on You Tube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V3RJ9RA2fk8

Way to go short notice - Spaghetti Feed today This is to all my fellow Clevelanders, since no one else is gonna make the trip at this point:
The Goddess Temple of Lakewood, Ohio, is holding a spaghetti feed today from 4-7 p.m. in the basement of the Masonic Temple in Lakewood, Ohio. Tickets are $10 each, and there will be raffles for crafts and services donated by temple members. The proceeds benefit the Goddess Temple of Lakewood, Ohio, a 501(c)(3) recognized church and one of only 3 or 4 such temples in the U.S. The Temple is raising money in the hopes of being able to rent "brick and mortar" space for their services.
I will be among the kitchen slaves, cooking spaghetti and garlic bread in the kitchen. We did this a year ago and it was a lot of fun. Especially fun when friends of mine show up and laugh at me!
You can buy tickets at the door. I'd love to see all of you there, if you feel like coming. Thanks!
Here's the address:
Lakewood Masonic Temple 15300 Detroit Avenue Lakewood, OH 44107-3888

poetry snippet? sometimes it means there's more writing on the way. how did I know this would happen?
It seems clear to me now I never stopped loving him. The time and the distance are irrelevant. And it's deja vu all over again.
I knew this would happen.

Serial comma, need for
Several groups trying to re-ignite New England's faith are theologically conservative, such as the Southern Baptists, Presbyterian Church in America and the Conservative Baptists' Mission Northeast. They say a reason for the region's hollowed-out faith is a pervasive theology that departs from traditional Biblical interpretation on issues such as the divinity of Jesus, the exclusivity of Christianity as a path to salvation and homosexuality. Yeah, I know.
Transcript of that opening.
INTERPRETER: And this "Cash for Clunkers" program-- I have read that you purchased many clunkers with our money.
OBAMA: Yes, we have.
(Hu Jintao "speaks.")
INTERPRETER: What does this word "clunkers" mean?
(Hu Jintao "speaks.")
OBAMA: Well, a clunker is a car...
(Hu Jintao "speaks.")
INTERPRETER: I know what a clunker is. And just so there is no misunderstanding, you are not allowed to pay us back in clunkers.
OBAMA:Of course not.
(Hu Jintao "speaks.")
INTERPRETER: You know, as I listen to you, I am noticing that each of your plans to save money involves spending even more money. This does not inspire confidence.
OBAMA: I assure you, you're going to get your money.
(Hu Jintao "speaks.")
INTERPRETER: Will you kiss me?
OBAMA: Sorry?
(Hu Jintao "speaks.")
INTERPRETER: Will you kiss me?
OBAMA: I don't understand.
(Hu Jintao "speaks.")
INTERPRETER: I like to be kissed, (shouts) when someone is doing sex to me!

Holy shit.
Well, if you wanted to finish and make sure Robert loved that show forever, you couldn't do any better on an extended rip on that scene from one of my favorite Everybody Else Loves It movies I can't stand, Say Anything.
That was pretty sweet.
I didn't watch SNL from the beginning, but I did listen. I used to get out of bed and listen to my parents watching the show, the first few seasons, through a cracked bedroom door.
This kind of show is why I keep watching.

That’s it.
Weekend Update's been solid all season, and the followup is the Angry Family Dinner thing, Thanksgiving edition. Which is pretty funny. God, I love Kristen Wiig.
And it doesn't really matter what you pack in after Update with that many solid lead skits. This thing can wind down into one skit nobody ever finished and it makes zero sense and twenty minutes of Dave Matthews, and it's still going to be a great one.
I think this is one for the books.

Oh yes…
...tied with the Coneheads, Bill Brasky, Barry Gibb Talk Show, and Brian Fellows Safari Planet for greatest Barrage of Nonsense recurring skits ever, Kenan Thompson's "What Up With That?" I understand why somebody wouldn't laugh at it, but it makes Evonne and I both die laughing.
An older one:
My son got me into Thompson a long time ago, actually. I always watched some of the stuff my kids watch with them, but...I have a limited tolerance for children's programs. Still, I'd run into good stuff because of them like Spongebob Square Pants and The Princess Diaries, and Max thought The Magic Whistle was hilarious at the time, so when he said Kenan & Kel was really funny, I watched it with him.
And...you know, it was a kid's show. It was okay. But...that one kid was really fucking funny.
I was so glad when he showed up in the second string cast on SNL later.
Still glad.

...so then Joseph Gordon-Levitt does the whole Donald O'Connor "Make 'Em Laugh" number as his monologue, and then...a mashup of the 2012 trailer with a Palin/Beck presidential win.
This may be one of those Best SNLs Ever I'm watching, here.

"You are not allowed to pay us back in clunkers."
Oh man, that "...while you are DOING SEX TO ME!" opening was one of the funniest in forever.
Also one of the wisest. Just counting down the days until the rest of the world figures out for real one morning that we're not in charge anymore.
That'll be interesting.

Sigh.
I need to go home soon.
I know two people who jumped off this bridge. One of them committed suicide, came home just to do it there, actually. The other's a drunk. He's jumped twice on dares.
I, um, have had sex with more than one woman in this gorge.
See, there's a bend near the back that cuts you way off from view, almost nobody who visits goes back there – you have a serious wade and swim, and a climb over a log jam in the way, plus a lot of climbing on slippery rocks. (Or that's how it used to be, anyway...could have changed.)
And then you get to this. So...you know, how could you not take off your clothes?
</p>
I think next time we go back I'm going to climb Beacon Rock again. I haven't done that for a while.

Tweedle me deedles.
